Pat and I were all alone climbing Doublehead Mountain yesterday. Silence enveloped us. All I could hear was the sound of my snowshoes breaking trail, my breathing, and an occasional grunt as I struggled to get up the steeps. It started to snow on our way down. First big flakes that opened up my heart with the wonder of being inside a snow globe. Then it changed to a mixture of ice and snow. I could hear the tick of the ice hitting my jacket, like a gentle knocking on my soul. I let it in. I let it all in — the silence and the ice ticking and the snow globe and the aloneness. It was ordinary and extraordinary in the same moment. Just Pat and I hiking along, like we always do, with the snow falling and the silence so loud and the beauty so quiet. This is why I hike.
