Great Gulf Trail up Washington yesterday. The trail, which is on the Terrifying 25 list, runs along a brook with beautiful waterfalls much of the way. On the steep headwall up the final mile we were actually climbing IN the waterfall. Our plan was to hike the 7+ miles (I know, it doesn’t sound like much, but it felt like it!) to the summit of Washington and take the Hiker Shuttle down. But by the time we got to the summit sometime between 4-5 pm, the Hiker Shuttle was gone. Some very nice people heard the Park Rangers saying they would give us a ride for $50 a piece, and they tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Come with us, it’s free!” Kind people restore my faith in the world and remind me that we are never really alone. The views, the foliage and kind people…it doesn’t get any better than that…oh yeah…and very tired legs.
